Champagne Devaux
↓
Champagne Devaux has a rich history dating back to the middle of the 19th century that began with two brothers, Jules and Auguste Devaux. Over the years, the Devaux House was run consecutively for over 100 years by three widowed women of the Devaux family, referred to as the “Champagne Widows.” These women ran the winery from 1846 until 1951, contributing to much of the winery’s success and expansion. Today, the estate is run by “Groupe Vinicole Champagne DEVAUX”.
This group has continued to respect the prestigious past of Champagne Devaux while looking towards an exciting future. It continues with the vision to produce excellent champagne with the highest standards of quality assurance through parcel selection, sustainable vineyard management, technical support at each key stage of the seasons and pressing done as close to the vineyards as possible. Important work is done in the cellar with long bottle aging of 3 and 5 years sur lie, which marks the Devaux style of aromatic complexity and great finesse. This great work is done under the guidance of Cellar Master Michel Parisot.

Situated in Côte des Bar, France
Champagne Devaux is situated in the heart of the Côte des Bar, which is located south of the Champagne appellation between Bar-sur-Seine and Bar-sur-Aube. The terroir produces the fruitiest expression of Pinot Noir due to its unique exposures and ideal soils. This area is responsible for 25% of all champagne production.
Champagne Devaux has a specific, unique vineyard quality process called the “D Selection,” which requires each grower to follow their strict set of rules. These rules far exceed the already demanding requirements set by the appellation system, making them the strictest in the Champagne region. These rules have been in effect for decades, therefore each champagne labeled with the “DEVAUX” signature owes its character to this strict quality process.
The People
—
The Devaux House family saga started with Jules and Auguste Devaux in the middle of the 19th century. Due to early deaths, the Devaux House was succeeded by the “Champagne Widows” that ran the estate over the course of over 100 years. The first woman to run the estate was Claude-Joseph Devaux, who was widowed at age 39 in 1843. She managed the house under the name “Maison Vve A. Devaux,” in Epernay alongside her son, François-Auguste. The second Champagne Widow to take over was Augusta-Maria Herbin, who ran the winery until 1895. By the early 1900s, Devaux began to see their success take flight, exporting 75% of their production. In 1907, the third Champagne Widow, Marguerite Marie-Louise, took over the winery and managed it until she passed in 1951 at the age of 80. The Champagne Widow saga ended with the succession of her two sons.
The last Devaux heir had no heirs of his own and so he entrusted the future of the Devaux House to Groupe Vinicole Champagne DEVAUX. This group has kept the vision and standards set in place by the Devaux family over the decades and has placed this prestigious Champagne House into great importance in the region. Adhering to the strict quality process instilled over the decades, Champagne Devaux produces products worthy of the title Grand Champagne.
