Aurelio Settimo

Aurelio Settimo

In 1943, the Settimo family settled in the Annunziata hamlet in La Morra, Piedmont. They practiced mixed farming in the early years and sold their grape harvest to local winemakers. By the end of the 1950s, Aurelio’s father started bottling his own wines from the grapes they grew, realizing how unique their land really was. In 1962, after his father’s passing, the Settimo family abandoned their mixed farming and decided to launch the Aurelio Settimo label. In 1962, after his father’s passing, Aurelio abandoned all other farming on the land and extended the vineyards to produce grapes for winemaking. It was then that the Aurelio Settimo estate was established.

Today, daughter Tiziana Settimo runs the estate’s operations after the passing of Aurelio in 2007. Aurelio’s philosophy, respect for the land and extreme care in the winemaking process are carried out by Tiziana just as her father taught her to do. Tiziana produces traditional Barolo and other varieties of the Piemonte region under the Settimo label.

The Wines

The Winery

Situated in Piedmont, Italy

Located in one of the best sub-zones of Barolo, La Morra, Aurelio Settimo’s vineyards span over 6 hectares planted with Nebbiolo vines and 1 hectare with Dolcetto grapes. Most of the Nebbiolo vineyards are south to south-west facing, which enables their Barolos to exhibit a full-bodied, yet soft character. Many of their vines are 40+ years old and harvests are done by hand. Strict vineyard management and low yields ensure a consistently great quality Barolo from vintage to vintage. A single vineyard Barolo Rocche is produced in exceptional vintage years, generally once every decade. Settimo produces an average of 40,000 bottles per year.

The People

Aurelio Settimo’s father bought farmland in the hamlet of Annunziata in La Morra, Piedmont in 1942. The farm was used for agriculture and animal raising, with a little under vines. The grapes in the early years were all sold to local winemakers. Through the 1950’s, Aurelio Settimo worked alongside his father farming and cultivating the farm. During this time more land was dedicated to vineyards and eventually, some of the wine was bottled under the Settimo Domenico label.

When Aurelio’s father died in 1962, he decided to abandon general farming and converted the farm all to vineyards and planted grapes for wine making. All grapes were used exclusively for the Settimo label and so the Aurelio Settimo wine estate was born.

In 2007, after the passing of Aurelio, his daughter, Tiziana, took over running the winery and is carrying on the passionate vineyard management, grape growing and winemaking processes started by Aurelio. She recognizes the significance of the sub-region of La Morra and produces great Barolo in the traditional method.
